I was in bed tuning around my radio and came upon his show in the Village. He was talking about how one of his childhood friends had made some "fantastically bad doughnuts." I later discovered his weekly show on WOR at 10:15 with the theme song. Some of my favorites were about his ham radio experiences, since I too was a radio operator.

As a teenager in NJ I listened to him every night at 9PM on WOR. His vivid repertoir would carry you away, and you'd forget you were listening to the radio. The man was an incredible artist of the imagination. His pallet, an infinite array of stories, his brush, a deep smoky voice born for after-dark radio, his canvas, the listener willing to let the imagination travel. I will never forget him.

Jean Shepherd was a shining star in the night of my adolescence and early adulthood. I watched his TV shows, read his books, and finally saw him in person at a College in Boston in the 70's. His books, his films, all his radio works, seem to speak directly to me, even more so now, thanks to the downloads from the shep-archives.
This site is what Internet should be doing: providing a profound living record of our times. I thank you for providing a *GREAT* service to all who enjoy Shepherd and more generally works of the spoken word.

Yep, I'm another of those thousands with their little plastic 9-volt Fuji-denkis tucked next to them in bed, grooving on Jean Shepherd's impossibly hip hours-long monologues. Thanks for reminding me - Excelsior !

s there any source of the TV series available to purchase?I think my favorite show was The Great American Fourth of July. Favorite line-Lud Kissel does not go to the BLUEBIRD for idle chit chat.

Just browsing and found Jean Shepherd to be a most interesting character. I am an enthusiast of the poet, Robert W Service, raised in Kilwinning, Scotland, and found this site doing a search on Service. My good pal, Iain D Shaw, and I do a 1 hour presentation entitled: Robert W Service - Poet of the People. Kindest regards to all readers.

When "In God We Trust" was published, Shep was still doing his live shows from the Limelight in NYC. A few of us teens from NJ came into the city to get autographed copies, and I recall the crowd in the nightclub was way beyond maximum capacity. Oh yeah, I got my copy signed, with the dedication "Excelsior" - but in the crush of humanity I had my watch stolen.

I have been trying to find these clips of Gene's for years. I worked in the old World War II aircraft hangar in Grand Prairie Texas as a Supply Tech for TX National Guard. It was drafty and cold, but every morning at 11:00, I would pour myself a hot coffee and listen to Gene and laugh. NPR wouldn't dare play these on the radio now. He was not politically correct enough. The things he talked about was freedom and tradition and having fun, guns, 4th of July. All that just does not fit in with those running NPR now. Can't wait to get home and write a letter to editor regarding this. Thanks for the opportunity to hear Gene once again. I saved the MP3s. I know his works will be gone soon, just like All in the Family. Taboo. TOO much Americana for those in the entertainment business. Too bad.

Typical Jersey kid with the radio under his pillow. Shep, later Jocko-no wonder I was sleepy on the bus to school. Had my parents drive me to the Paperback Gallery in NYC to buy a copy of "I, Libertine" by "Frederick R.Ewing". Bought my 1st KLH stereo at the hi-fi store he advertised (they were perfect shits in that store). My son & daughter had me take them to see Christmas Story again and again.
Anyone remember his recipes? Root Beer Soup? A dish where you froze a cabbage leaf and dropped it on the plate just before serving?
