I grew up in Wilmington Delaware listening to Shep at night on WOR New York, "the world's only wind powered radio station". I'm 56 now and I cherish those memories.

I discovered Jean Shepherd with my 6 transistor radio under my pillow. My first memories are of his live Saturday Night broadcasts from the Village on WOR. Of course I became a fan of his weekday shows at 11:15PM then later on at 10:15PM. Thanks for the memories. Ol' Shep is one of the main influences on my radio career. And I never miss "A Christmas Story" every year.

I lived in Brooklyn. N.Y. and listened to him on WOR when he had a 3 hour program- At that early age I was already a Night Person-would listen to h is voice and maniacal laughter and drank it all in. It was his voice-he could express so much with his voice. My dad thought there was some sinister undercurrents in his stories, but I was a young girl and probably didn't understand half of what he was talking about. It was just his voice-he was a bard-the Homer of the 20th century- and being living in the big prune, I knew the places he takled about when he would weave his stories about New York. It is wonderful that through the blessing of the computer, his voice will not be stilled, and those who loved him will never lose him or his art. Thank you for letting me tell my story about how Gene Sheperd touched my life.

Great memories from a time gone by... My brother George and I would listen to WOR from our bunk beds. The quickest way to bed was my folks reminder that we'd miss his show. off to bed we'd run. I remember his radio contol airplane stories, collecting a million bottle caps. Oh... if life could be so simple again!

Thank you so very much for this website honoring Shep!Having grown up in Chicago (1930-1950) on the South Side I can truly relate to a lot of Shep's commentary. I remember when Calumet City was known as Sin City rather than Vegas haha...

Quite a while ago I taped a TV program with Shep visiting Comisky Park and recalling a game against the Yankees...Ted Lyons was pitching for the Sox who were leading in the top of the 9th and Gehrig came to bat...Shep's ol'man hollared "hit it up here ya bum" AND HE DID winning the game!...Alas, a stupied error by me erased it off the tape!

I also was in the radio game and did work for a Gary Indiana Radio Station where I did a monolog at 11pm. I was a combo man working my way thru college and from 4 to 11 I baby sit the transmitter site filled out the fcc log and did my homework but at 11 till 1 I was a disk jockey and monologist on WGRY. I felt for a long time I was running a parallel path with Shep.

We watched (Again - Every year) his version of a Christmas story and finally decided to do a web search and fouand this site.
We moved here to Arizona May 1999 and since we've been here we've wondered what became of him. Never heard of his passing. One of the bad things here is a lack of true culture. Any not knowing Shep is seriously laking and not even a mention of his passing here.

But to Shep, used to go to bed listening to him, with the radio on auto-off. Lived in Jersey for a while and got to see him at a few of Princeton's homecoming weekends. My most vivid memory of him is - The first time I saw him. He (among other things spoke of a few army buddies going to the Jersey Shore to see an ocean they (coming from the farm states) they had never seen. Ate more lobster that they never seen much less eaten, much too much And then rode an Ferris Wheel, AND PUKED IN THE CAGE & COULDN'T GET OUT 'TIL IT WAS OVER.

There were a few things about that night,

How can anyone ever make you laugh so hard over puking in a Ferris wheel that you laugh soooooo hard you almost puke yourself. And I learned never to go to Dinner again before a Shep show.

My wife & I still see him every time we drive a back road of Georgia or Arizona or in any of-the-mainsteam-out-of-the-way place and say "What would Shep make of this??" If you listened to him you would know what that's about.

We moved here to Arizona May 1999 and since we've been here we've wondered what became of him. Never heard of his passing.

There are a few tears on my keyboard now. Just missing him was one thing, now finding he's gone is another.

The funniest guy I ever heard and I have seen the best.

Hadn't thought of Jean Shepherd in years..saw him on a thanksgiving deal on the History Channel. I don't suppose there are any tapes of his "America" shows on PBS from 1971? Would love to have some.

Hey hard to believe there is a "flick lives" site. I remember writing that on the blackboards in Christopher Columbus High School in Bronx NY for weeks. Finally got caught and had to explain the whole "flick lives" thing because with block letters "FLICK" can look like a different word. Listened to Shep everynight with the ol transistor radio under the pillow thing.

I used to listen to Shep every weekday evening into the early hours - I did many college lab reports while listening to him - I still have a record that he made titled "Jean Shepherd and Other Foibles".His tales of a kid growing up in Indiana especially hit home with me since I grew up there also. I am glad to see that this website keeps his memory alive.
