As a relative “newcomer” to the world of Jean Sheperd, I’m a 42 year old Canadian who’s first introduction to Jean Shepherd was in the mid-80’s with the hilarious classic “A Christmas Story”.
I stumbled onto “flick lives” by fluke…or more appropriately, fate!!

After receiving the MP3 collections from Jeff I was hooked!!…

Kudos to Jim and Jeff who put so much heart and T.L.C into this GREAT site!!
It’s given someone like myself a golden opportunity to hear and appreciate Jean Sheperd !!…yes, indeed, flick lives!!

No one spoke to me like Jean Sheppard. He was funny and insightful, with a recognizable soothing voice. As a street kid from Brooklyn living in a packed house of six kids, Shep was a refuge for me. As a kind and benevolent radio unckle who I could trust, he always made me feel good. Sounds a little sappy but its true.

Shep was a storyteller par excellance, a friend during sleepless nights of childhood and, later, an uplifting and much-anticipated radio presence, whose shows I rarely missed.

During the time he did the Saturday night remote from the Village Limelight, I was too young to get in; later, it was too crowded.

At age 16, I managed to get myself invited as a panelist on WOR's "Amazing Randi" Show, which went on the air right after Shep's. Much of the reason for having done so was the hope that I might catch a glimpse of the great man or even meet him. It was one of my biggest disappointments of my young life when I was confined in the Green Room during Shep's show and called into Randi's studio as Shep was leaving.

No one was happier than I when "The Christmas Story" was released, in that Shep was no longer a "secret" and could be enjoyed my a larger audience. Now that his mortal voice has been stilled, his narration brings back warm memories.

Keep your knees loose, Shep.

Not even sure when I first listened to Jean Sheppard but it was 54 at the latest. Used to hear his all night show. Had to play the radio in my bedroom way down low so my parents couldn't hear. Almost never made it to the end without falling asleep after a couple of hours but did pull it off once or twice. Always loved the stories of when he was a kid and/or when he was in the army.

I am orginally from the midwest. Shep is definately "our" humorist and commentator. Through his stories about the White Sox and so forth, he helped us understand ourselves. I believe he loved his roots, and he loved us, even if he had odd ways of showing it. His Introduction to the Ade book is the wisest commentary on the Midwestern mindset ever. Thanks to Flicklives, Shep himself lives on.
