Bergmann, Eugene B.
Author, Jean Shepherd Historian

Gene is not only the author of the most comprehensive book on Jean Shepherd's career, but a fan of Shepherd's since 1956 when, as a teen in school, he joined the ranks of loyal listeners, even taping some of the earliest recordings of Shep on the radio.

Shortly after Shep's death in 1999, Gene felt compelled to write a book about Shepherd's career. He wanted to explore Shepherd's style which made him such a success and the mysteries that surrounded him. Jean Shepherd spent 22 years on WOR radio, doing a daily unscripted show. For forty-five minutes, and in the early years for many hours overnight, he would talk about everything you could imagine, but as much as Shep talked, we never learned much about the private man behind the microphone. Gene takes on the task of digging into that enigma that surrounded Shepherd.
