I actually discovered Shep when I attended one of his shows in Clinton, New Jersey. From that I found his books and read them, and finally saw A Christmas Story. I found this site in reading a book about the rebel comedians of the fifties and sixties and the chapter on Shep mentioned this site.

I remember listening to Jean on WOR way down in southeast PA with friends. We were 15 or 16 yrs old. Jean was magical... I just relived it, for a moment... Doug, Ted... are you out there?

Here in NJ we can listen to Shep on radio station WBAI 99.5 on tuesday mornings at 5:00. Unfortunatly I'm getting up that early for anything. My question is where can I buy tapes of the old WOR shows?

I used to always hear about Jean Shepherd from my dad, who heard him in Ohio in the late Forties, I believe. Tracking down Jean Shepherd tapes, CDs, and memorabilia has been useful when it comes to gift-giving time. What great stories! I always thought they were 100% true :)

Just browsing and found Jean Shepherd to be a most interesting character. I am an enthusiast of the poet, Robert W Service, raised in Kilwinning, Scotland, and found this site doing a search on Service. My good pal, Iain D Shaw, and I do a 1 hour presentation entitled: Robert W Service - Poet of the People. Kindest regards to all readers.

I have been involved in broadcast engineering for 33 years. My ham call is WA8SLJ. What fun to come across this site. I had an "NPR Driveway Moment" recently when All Things Considered ran a tape of Shep's experience at a march in Washington DC.

The Old Man listened to Shep every night on WOR-710, and it wasn't until I went to high school that I discovered Shep, and realized to my horror that The Old Man was HIP! He also turned me on to Bob & Ray, who spent afternoons on WOR while I was in college. In those Vietnam War years, with The Old Man on Nixon's side and me against it, our love of Shep brought us closer together. I went on to a career in broadcasting --first radio, then TV, now back to radio. And it was hearing NPR's replay of Shep's March On Washington molologue a few weeks ago on "All Things Considered" that led me to this site. Since I discovered Flick Lives.com, I've been laughing out loud at my computer, catching up on all the Shep stories I'd forgotton or never heard. Thanks for Flick Lives.com, and thanks, Shep.

I would like to know with whom the original tapes of "Jean Shepherd's America", originally aired by PBS in the early seventies, now reside. I would have thought, given their profundity, humor, and timelessness and all the PBS stations that there are (i.e., not to mention all the cable stations which have come on the air since), that they would have arisen repeatedly in reruns by now; instead, to my knowledge, they have not been aired in 30 years. I am very pleased to have discovered this web site and the vintage WOR Shep programs re-broadcast on WBAI-FM at 5:15 AM evry Tuesday. Flick lives!

Growing up on Long Island, I had been a Jean Shepherd fan since I started listening to his shows on WOR in 1967. Every night at 10:15 PM, right after Roger Skibinitz delivered the news,I would listen to the familiar strains of Shep's themesong over my transistor radio and remain spellbound for the next 45 minutes. This man, I thought, was a Master Storyteller -- a true Raconteur. Later that year I discovered that he had been publishing short stories in Playboy, which led me to start purchasing that magazine on a regular basis (for Shep's stories, of course..). In 1971, while attending Adelphi University, I had the pleasure of seeing Shep perform live, at Adelphi. He lectured us for about an hour and a half on various subjects, all the while interweaving anecdotes and stories from his past to illustrate his points. It was a fascinating talk.I later learned that Shep had taught a Communications course at nearby Queens College, and it was always the first course to fill up each year. His radio shows, preserved on tape by legions of True Shepherd Fans, are timeless. And, ya know, since tomorrow is the Fourth of July, I think I'll listen to my tape of Shep reading "Ludlow Kissel and the Dago Bomb", just for old times sake. Congratulations on a great web site for Old Shep. Hang loose, gang...

My cousin told me about Jean Shepherd when I was about 12 but I soon got into listening to him way more than my cousin ever did. Listening to some of his shows recently has made me appreciate his talents more than I did back then.
