Watching A Christmas Story with my parents was my first experience with the genius of Shep. My parents were both native NYers so my father would tell me of the hours he used to spend listening to Shep on WOR. Thanks to the efforts of all the great fans, I listen to Shep almost everynight just as he used to. Those old broadcasts are amazing. My Dad passed away a few years ago, but his love for radio lives within me -- thanks to all the fans who had the foresight to tape this stuff and thanks for sharing.

"Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" was my intro to Shep. It remains my favorite.

I worked briefly with Shep at WKRC radio in 1949 and listened to him regularly when he had the all night program on WLW sponsored by American Airlines. Somehow I seem to recall that American Airlines sponsored him on all-night radio to use the signal for navigation. Prior to that the clear channel stations would sign-off at about 1:00 A.M. I still enjoy Shep's style and works!!

When I was a kid living in Jersey my Ma used to listen to WOR on a funky old black kitchen radio. I was mesmerized. Shep, rambling w/ Gambling, and the Fitzgeralds who just oozed culture and glamour, at lest to a 7 year old kid. When we moved to Vt in the late 50s we could still pick him up as I recall. Alas soon my teenaged interests turned to rock & roll and I was hooked on late night WPTZ and WKBW. The Joey Reynolds Show! I was in heaven!

I got turned on to this site less than 24 hours ago when I got an email from an old high school buddy that I recently reconnected with. It was a business related e-mail but at the very end of it he mentioned this site. Naturally I checked it out immediately. We had both been at the Shep press conference at the Overseas Press Club in New York in March 1970. I remember as Shep came into the room that day I played "Hail to the Chief" on my kazoo. Shep referred to my rendition that night on his show on WOR. It's still the only 50,000 watt mention I've ever gotten. I grew up on Long Island and listened to Shep every night while I was in high school from 1968 through 1972. My dad used to listen to Shep and I got the habit from him. I still vividly remember the day I picked up my copy of In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash at the local book store. I now live in the suburbs of Chicago. I'll have to make the trip over to Hammond to check out Flick's Tap. Jean Shepherd was definitely a big part of my formative years.

I find it odd that of the hundreds of half hour re-broadcasts of Shepherd that I have heard not once did he ever mention anything about his daughter! Shortly after Shepherd passed away I heard her when she called up the Bob Grant Show on WOR .She claimed that her father had shunned her for years.Jean Shepherd as you know spoke of everyone and everything affecting him and his life, but not his daughter?

I believe it was during the International Geophysical Year (1958)that I first discovered Shep. I had moved to Michigan and very vividly remember hearing Shep talk about his amateur radio and the Northern lights which I can see brightly where we lived. I moved to Ireland in the mid-1960s and actually heard him one evening as I was hunting for United States radio stations and was familiar with WOR. Being a radio amateur I actually talked to Shep on 2 meters as he sometimes drove from New York to the south somewhere. He would check into our radio repeater in Wilmington Delaware. It was a great pleasure to talk with him and each year at Christmas those fond memories return as we watch with great-grandchildren, the Christmas Story.

I was in High School when I first discovered Jean Shepherd. I remember rushing home from school to listen to Bob and Ray and then at night listening to Shepherd with a small transister radio under my pillow. WOR had some great programming! Somewhere in my collection I have a newspaper photo clipping of the entire on-air talent from that era. I also made a short film in college based on "The Return of the Smiling Wimpy Doll"

First started listening to Shep's and Barry Farber's nighttime broadcasts in the mid-60s on WOR, which could be picked up fairly clearly in Philadelphia after dark. I recall three particular shows, all Limelights, I think which I haven't been able to find. One had Shep and Gasser going to an amusement park on a weekend pass after eating oysters; another involved Shep as a child being forced to drink the old man's Blatz beer after taking Fleishman's yeast to clear his skin, and the last was a baseball recitation involving Gaylord Perry's pitching, I think in summer 1966 or 1967. Later in the early 70s, when his books were available in paperback, I became even a bigger fan.

Found him in early 50's, all night radio on WOR. Might have done better in college if I slept instead of listening. Remember one story about Lou Gerhig hitting a home run that hit the back wall of the stands still rising, and Mrs. Gerhig called on phone. Wondered whether it was true. Loved the station breaks, something like, "speaking about idiots, this is WOR AM and FM."

I am looking for a movie that was made with Ralphie as the main character again. If I remember correctly it was about the gang and them having tops or marbles. I have seen this movie only 1 time in the mid 90's. Don't know the name of it though. Can anyone help. I don't even know if it was by Mr. Shepherd.
