I remember riding in the back seat of my parents' '65 Chevy one Christmas Eve while my Dad fiddled with the AM radio, and heard this most amazing man tell a wonderful story about a Red Ryder BB gun. I asked my Dad who it was. He told me proudly, "Jean Shepherd". From that night on, I kept a small transistor radio under my pillow to listen to Shep for many years to come. I remember seeing him "live" at Fairleigh Dickinson in Madison, NJ many years later with my younger brother (who also became hooked on Shep), and listened to him spin childhood tales ... of getting his tongue stuck on an icy flagpole in the winter and "writing" his name in the snow (including an extra wiggle for the exclamation point). 35 years later, I'm introducing my kids to Shep, now that they're old enough to enjoy him. Yet another generation, mesmerized under his magic spell.

I was in first or second grade, the year is slightly vague. I do know that when I was in the 4rth grade a buddy of mine and I were talking, and shep came up and we hade both been listening for "YEARS" (what ever that means to a 9 year old.) But we both grew up in queens and listened religiously every night before falling aslep. The second I hear his voice I am right back there in the attic in bayside wondering just what a Bugatti was and how to spell it ! Lord I miss those days.

saw your name in "excelsior, you fathead"- googled the name-and saw the article I wrote for the Valkyrie all those years ago....so the universal thump is passed round. Lately, while playing a sort of slow blues/ragtime version of "hail to the Varsity"..I know you know it..I had indelible orange and black visions of "gus" and "sudsy lux" and all of us children caught between eras....still, it is, I suppose, good to know that the once night people are still around...a bit less intense. Yeah, it's all there, and a yard wide.

I call my chocolate lab the bumpus hound, because he is a beast! i got a leg lamp for my father, and my mother refused to let him put it out in the livingroom, so he kept it in his workshop until she passed away. then he put it in the front window, but the bulb kept burning out! i think there's a short in the lamp, but he says my mother's mad.

I enjoy everything he did. What a bright and funny guy. I wonder why we never hear anything about his personal life...

A great and old family tradition at the Matchinsky house is to spend Thanksgiving evening watching Christmas Story. We laugh each time as if it was the first time we saw it. This time we had about 15 of us crowded into the family room. Fire in the fireplace, plenty of desserts, wine, and drinks to go around, and once more ...with feeling. Am also an old fan of Best 4th of July, and the railroad series. Thanks Shep. You are a part of our family and we have become a part of yours. We may be forgotten in 4000 years, but story telling won't.

I moved to New York city in 1966 from the Chicago area. I was a pilot for Pan American and when not flying I always tined in to WOR 710 on the dial and listened to Shep with Baited Breath. I loved the stories b, being from the some basic area in Chicagoland area I could really relate to the stories. THEN!!!one evening at 10pm I tuned in and shep was GONE!! GONE!! He was replaced by some BOOB called Bernard something or other doing a call in show. CURSES!! NUTS!! I sure miss his voice & wit. God Bless Him. I know that he is entertaining many souls "UP There" I hope he keeps the light on for me. Thanks Shep.

I'm in bed, the music starts: dah-dah-dah-dah dumpt-ditty -dump-ditty-dump-dah-dah-dah...then that Voice. Shep took me through his childhood like it was my own. Ralph,Flick,Zudock, and all the rest! I'm 50 years old with a lump in my throat. I've been teaching for 27 years, its all story-telling! "Mr. M., how do you tell those stories and still make it all wind up back at what you are teaching us" Thanks Shep! You Fathead. P.S. When we saw you at Carnegie Hall you looked up at us and said "Look at those lunatics up in the cheap seats!" Excelsior! the chaepseats"

Shep was the first of the real radio talk show entertainers. Without him there might not be a Rush Limbaugh or any of the other radio personalities.
