It was on past my bedtime. I was one of those kids hiding the radio under the covers. My two favorite memories: when his radio was hit by lightning and his mother proclaimed,"YOU BROKE THE HOUSE!!!", and an episode which ended with the questionable advice,'Lie, kid. Lie for all you're worth. And they'll BELIEVE you!'

Thanks for putting together this comprehensive site! When I was a teenager I missed uncounted hours of sleep as I lay with my ear next to a transistor radio, listening to him weave his tapestries of words and sounds. (I heard his shows on a local Public Radio station in the Washington, D.C., area.)

Great stuff! Where can I find tapes, cds, dvds of movies, tv and other perfomances? I have his four books, many Playboy articles, two albums and some odd homemade radio show tapes and posters. I had the George Ade anthology with Shep's intrduction but I loaned it out never to be returned! I have been unable to find it since. Any ideas? Pete.

73 Magazine site led me here. I sure do miss Jean Shepherd. His stories about growing up and his old man will forever be remembered.

In the midst of an unending stream of attention-seeking media, I find myself listening to recordings made 30-plus years ago by a man who managed to immortalize the old woman who gave him cookies on his boyhood paper route. And as I listen, I realize that almost anything that really matters can be found on these old tapes... not a bad life's work, if you ask me.

I was first exposed to Jean in a PBS show from the '70's called The Great American Dream Machine, with Marshall Efron - Jean would do antidotes about living in America and the Midwest - he really hit a chord with me, and I've been a fan ever since.

My first wife and I used to listen to Shep in the mid 50s when we were students. Why can't I find his books and short stories in amazon.com? Where can I buy his short stories published in Playboy?

I can date my first exposure to Shep as 12/24/1965 and his reading of Rattling Home for Christmas when I was 15. I was in bed tuning around on my Sony 8 Transistor radio, a gift from my Grandfather who had passed away a couple of years earlier when I hear "it". I haven't been the same since. I didn't realize it was a regularly scheduled show until a couple of weeks later when I heard Shep again, this time reading Robert Service. My sone gave me me 746 of Shep's shows on a pair of audio DVDs in MP3 format for Christmas last year. I had to install a DVD drive in the computer to play them (my DVD player will play CD MP3s but not DVD MP3s) but I've got them now. What a circle, first heard Shep on a gift from my Grandfather and now am listening to him again on a gift from my son.

I had a black Emerson radio...and at the tender age of 14 became a "Night Owl." I listened to Shep from 11:30 thru till Midnight on WOR 710 on the AM dial. And to this day I've the dark rings beneath my eyes to prove it. Sometimes I catch a bit of Long John...but Junior High School proved more powerful and off to zzzz land I went. Then, through those magical moments of friendship...my pal Bruce Haskell also tuned in...and all we'd do during high school gym class was talk about Shep.... To this day...and, in fact the internet has brought us together ..Bruce, Shep and I. Well, I have had the exceptional good fortune of actually meeting the exhaulted one at a NY Yankee's baseball game. I won a ticket on the Big Wilson Show (WNBC 660 on the AM dial) ..this was 1964...I saw a small photo of Shep in Playboy...he wrote an occasional piece for them... Well, I looked behind me and WOW...a familiar face...it was HIM. SHEP... and I mustered the courage to walk over during a lull in the game and introduce myself (after ascertaining that Shep was actually Shep) ... then (my palms are still moist) I asked Shep for his autograph...on whatever paper I had. He most thoughtfully signed his name. We shook hands ...and I returned to my seat...with one foot in heaven. It's still there. I loved the man. We all did.

Heard about this site from a bartender at the Jungle Bar in Evansville, Indiana. Still searching your site, but still have not found my favorite Jean Sheperd radio spot. I heard it in Chicago while driving, maybe in the late 60s or early 70s. Seems like it was the CBS radio network, but could have been NPR. Jean was reminising about summers in Northern Indiana: a plastic radio on the fridge is playing a camp Hawaiian tune (Aloha Oye!). As I recall, he uses this song as a refrain throughout. But the spot is really about going to the beach in Hammond and floating on an old inner tube on Lake Michigan: the soot from the mills drifting down, an empty wine bottle floats by ... It was just fantastic, probably the best modern American audio humor I've ever heard. If anyone who reads this know the title of this exceptional piece, I would be most grateful. Mike

After watching PBS's "Jean Shepard's America" and hearing about Sgt Kowalski and the troop train was hooked. Discovered Shepard on WBEZ in Chicago and would get up at the crack of dawn to listen. Moving on to his books and got my whole family hooked with "In God We Trust." Loved "Christmas Story" and got inspired to do an internet search and found "Flick Lives."
