My mom turned me on to Shep. She listened every night. This was in the later years of the regular, weeknight show. I was too young to stay up late every night (yes, another listener-on-the-sly though I think my Mom knew). It was a special treat for me to stay up late with her on the 4th of July hoping Shep would tell Ludlow Kissel and the Dago Bomb. That was our favorite story. My poor Dad had to get up for work but was subject to the two of us laughing our butts off. I grew up in Plainfield so when Shep mentioned The Flagship on Route 22 it was kinda cool. I wonder how many listeners ventured to Union to see it. When I went to Lehigh in the fall of 1971, I made some new fans (and some enemies) playing one of his albums over and over. I can't remember the name and all I remember of the cover was that it had a drawing on the front with an Army guy standing in an open file cabinet drawer. Anyone know which one that was? Radio was spotty but I could occasionally get a good signal and would sometimes call my Mom to talk about last night's show. In 1978 I saw him at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. I was so excited; like a little kid at Christmas. Early in the show, he revealed that the stories were not true; they were fiction. I remember feeling hurt and betrayed. Like he had pulled the wool over everyone's eyes all those years. But it quickly rebounded my affection and admiration for the man when I started thinking about the talent it took to pull that off. I didn't find out until years later that the broadcasts, for the most part, were off the top of his head. More respect. After the show, I stood in line with my "Wanda Hickey" (my other books were at my parents). I couldn't believe the imbecilic (sp?) things the people in front of me were saying. Shep was doing his best but I could read the consternation on his face. And these bums were clueless! Fortunately, I was the last one in line. Finally my turn! Don't blow it! Remember to ask for the Red Ryder BB Gun! Just kidding. The one thing I remember talking to him about was where he got the idea for Wanda Hickey (the story). He said he had been walking down the street in Manhattan in the wee hours. Two couples in prom clothes came bursting out of a bar nearly knocking into him. They went sprawling onto the sidewalk in an obvious rookie-drunken manner. That moment ignited a spark that led him to write the story. More pure genius. I wanted to stand there and chat all night but by then he was done drawing a charicature of me and signing the book. Thanks for a great site. Keep your knees loose!

This site is great! I just turned 49 and I've been feeling kinda nostalgic lately, so I've been looking for some recordings of Mr. Shepard. I remember listening to him on with my mom at our home in New Jersey when I was younger. Thanks for setting up this site!

I read about your site in the Chicago Tribune this past weekend. The site is fantastic! I first became aware of Mr. Shepherd many years ago watching "The Great American Dream Machine" on Chicago PBS station WTTW. I absolutely fell in love with his story telling, his narrative voice and even the fact that we are from the same area here (Crown Point is the county seat for Hammond, and I grew up even closer that that adjacent to Hammond in Munster, Indiana.) Without question, I firmly believe he was the premiere story teller of our generation. I commend you for keeping alive awareness of his contributions. Thank you for the great job.

I stumbled onto this website looking for something else, but it caught my attention. I know of Jean Shepherd because he dated my Aunt (Dorothy Anderson - Martin) and was friends with my Father (Johnny Anderson) years ago. I have several letters that he wrote to Dorothy when he was in the army. By the way, I noticed in the glossary under "people" that you have listed that you are uncertain whether Dorothy and Johnny are real people or not...they are (or were in my Father's case) definitely real people.

Shep is the best! One of my favorite things he did was announce a huge parade not unlike Macy's, etc., except the parade was "The March of Time" and he described historical figures and events..... you had to be there but it was brilliant! Shep is a constant in my life and there's never been a time in my life where his movies, books, short-stories or albums hasn't been able to cheer me up. He's the under-rated genius of our time, he's a modern day Twain and O. Henry rolled into one. I sure miss him and wonder how much material we missed out on. I love you, Shep!

I listened to Jean as a young man and loved the way he kept a story so real you thought you knew all his friends personally. I went to see him at Council Rock High school and it was a higlight for me and my cousin Mike. I sure miss him. wonder what happened to my kazoo?

Great work! I never heard of any of the old radio shows -- it is wonderful to be able to hear them now. What a story teller! My late wife and I really enjoyed the America series... whether he was: extolling the virtues of "Beer"; sitting a swamp boat talkin' 'bout Pogo and Churchy Le Femme: recalling when he and his friends went down to the train yard to help unload a Sears Mail-Order house; his Dad's old Buick/Chevy/Oldsmobile and the"Rheostats" in his Mother's hair; "Whose face is on the $1,000 bill... you probably have one in your wallet..take it out now." ... so many priceless hours of enjoyment. We recorded many of these on the VCR, but unfortunately the tapes are lost. Is there anywhere that these shows are available for purchase? Or, are the shows scheduled to air again, anywhere? I (and I think many others) would like to enjoy these again. Thanks in Advance! Dick Applebaum P.S. Did the theme song of America have a name and/or who was the artist.

What a wonderful storyteller! He was truly a treasure. I only regret that he did not live longer to tell us more tales of Ralphie, his brother, and his friends, not to mention "the old man" who was a "pickle juice connoisseur". God bless him where ever he is!
