High School Shep Fans were the nerds of their time in the '60's. We didn't care! Each afternoon before boarding the bus home we would shout a hearty EXCELSIOR YOU FATHEAD to all who were within earshot. We also had "EYF" pocket protectors.

Great site. I have alwsy been a big fan. I was an abused child so going to bed and listening to Shep alwys made things a great deal easier. He would take my pain away and I loved the little bit of peace I could get falling asleep. Saw Shep once at Carnagie Hall with my mom( who turned me on to Shep) and it was the one thing that I remeber doing with my mom that was enjoyable. I snuck out on my mom that night and smoked a joint in the hallways at Carnagie hall ! Bought All Ohters ....a long time ago,had to amke a vist to the mysterious Greenwhich Village! I felt so cool that a kid form Queens could "get it." See ya.

i was 12 and Shep broadcast from wor transmitter in my town of carteret, nj. that caught my attention. then i heard him say things i could not then feel comfortable expressing to anyone. he saved my sanity in an oh so perfect 50's society. spoke with him at the limelight and when i bought 'in god we trust...'. wish his later years were not so full of angst. i love what he did...

When I was in high school in the bleak fifties Shep was one of the few bright comforts. Does anyone remember (or better yet, have a tape of), his "invectives"? Ten seconds of silence, during which you would turn your radio up to max vol, put it facing outward in the open window, then Shep, full blast: "OKAY, I'M WISE TO YOU!!!"...or once, a friend told me, the sound of a train coming and going, complete with whistle.

I grew up in Wilmington Delaware listening to Shep at night on WOR New York, "the world's only wind powered radio station". I'm 56 now and I cherish those memories.

Because of your website, I can sit at my computer and listen to the shows I heard on our old AM radio when I was a kid, and for a while I am thirty years younger. Money cannot buy this. I owe you more thanks than I can express. Jared Kline Colonel, US Army

I listened to Jean Shepherd late at night from KYW Philladelphia in 1952-53. I was in my bedroom with the lights out. My folks thought I was sleeping. I remember the "Fig Newton 8" was the car that the "upper crust types" were driving. Piasecki Helicopter was one of the sponsors. I lost track of Shep untill I recognized the voice in the "Christmas Story".

I still try to associate Hammond locations with story references. Although urban renewal has changed the 'old Hammond' business district to a large degree and most 40's era retail buidings are gone.

I remember Jean Shepherd as a kid. I can't say what year though but probably mid 60s. The memories I have are coming home from my grandmother, who lived in Woodside [NY] and driving along the LIE [Long Island Expressway ]. My brother and I sat in the back seat and listened to the stories all the way home, wishing the trip took longer. We would race inside to get ready for bed so we could listen tot he rest of the show. My mother loved him as much as we did so we would listen on the clock radio till we fewll asleep. Just the sound of his voice brings back memories even to the point of the feel of the interior of the car and the lights of the roadway as we drove home. Funny how a little thing like a voice can bring such memories. I downloaded some of his work from the archive site and when my mother came over the house I played it without her knowing what I was going to play. The look on her face, in her eyes is priceless, as if an old friend returned. I had a reading problem and read as little as possible but one of the few books I read from cover to cover was "The Ferrari In The Bedroom". I still have it missing jacket and spine broken but it provided many hours of sheer enjoyment. I am just happy I could have lived that time and heard him but am a little sad I could not remember more of his shows and /or recorded them. I thank all those who recorded the shows and made them available I love to listen and go back to those carefree days for me as a kid in NYC growning up. Every year I watch "A Christmas Story" it is to me the same as "It's A Wonderful Life " is to many others. [ I enjoy both movies but Shepherd's has a deeper significance]. In grammer school everyone knew I listened and I thought I was the only one till someone wrote on the bathroom walls "Flick Lives". I was the first suspect but it seems many otehrs also listened besides me. I thought the phrase "Flick Lives" was something between he and I ...boy was I surprised to find someone else. I never learned the person who did it and I was almost immediately exhonerated of all wrong doings. This was also in a Catholic School so it shows that he was listened by all and of all ages, I was in 7th or 8th grade at the time. In the past year I reread my book and read all his others including the Bio , "Excelsior, You Fathead!" by Eugene Bergmann. This book showed me a different side to the many, the myth and the legend. Just wish he were here to read these and was still on the radio or TV. I can still see the old man and the friends at the lot with the prefab house and all the pieces unmarked...how vivid.

This is great! Finding your(the Shepard)web site is like a time machine. I have been a fan since, as several article in the archives have described, sleeping at night with my transistor radio volume down low pretending to sleep and faithfully listening every night to the stories and his great american philosphy of life. My kids have only grown up with "The Christmas Story" and several of the other made for TV stories which I have on Video. The ability to have them listen and watch the many brilliant stories that Shepard provided over the years will only be deminished by the spontineity of his wit. I had the chance to participate in the 1967 Village Voice Automoblie Rally in Washington Square in which Shepard was the MC. I still remember him giving a brief history of each car as it came to the starting position and my pride as he was enthusiastic of my limited edition 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk that me and my friends from New Jersey entered in the Rally. (even though I finished "dead last"). I will continue to serf the Jean Shepard Web site, so far its brought back many memories, to see what his fans have assembled. Thank you for an early Christmas present

My older brother used to listen to Jean Shepherd and got me started. I was about 19 and lived in NY. On Jan 20, 1986, after purchasing a couple of books, I brought them over to Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI where Shep was going to do a book signing. He was doing a series of talks at the college for the winter break. While he waited about 15-20 for a chair we had a nice chat since I was first on line . It was the day the Challanger went down. Also got to hear him speak as a member of the audience at Calvin College. Later I called my brother and said "guess who I talked to today"...honest truth...he said "Jean Sheherd". Amazing.

I share the feelings about Jean Shepherd. His stories and commentaries are timeless for both their entertainment and relevance. I have introduced these to my two son's, 14 and 17, respectively, who have become ardent fans of the available collections. Now, onto a more practical question: does a conclusion to the Godzonka story actually exist? I'd really like to hear it, if it does. Dan
