Comments: Had the great pleasure to watch Shepherd do one of his radio shows in the studio when I was working on-air at WXLO (WOR-FM) in 1973, right out of college. He invited Walt Sabo and me to sit in on a taping. We, of course, had been absolute lunatic fans of his since high school, as was any self-respecting kid working in radio at the time who was within the sound of Shepherd's voice. Shep chatted with us informally and took an interest in what we were doing on the FM station, casually conversing until he cued his theme music to start. He signaled for his mic and went on for 45 minutes without notes. Walt and I left the studio twitching.
On July 4, 2006, I was sitting on my boat on Lake Tahoe, drinking my Bloody Charlie, watching the town's fireworks go off over the water and listening to the MP3 Ludlow Kissel broadcast from July 4, 1967, a broadcast which I remember listening to "live" in my '65 Chevy Malibu, parked on a hill somewhere near Whippany, New Jersey, while watching the fireworks from several neighboring towns. As was tradition, the fireworks reached their grand orgy of a climax and ended precisely at 10 p.m., just as Shep's theme echoed to a close.
Charles King in Florham Park, NJ is right: Shep's high school-age fans were the geeks of their day.
