"Hurling" Invectives
During his 1950's late night broadcasts, Shep would at times "hurl an invective". This was done by his telling the listeners to place their radio on the window sill and when instructed, turn the volume way up. He would then yell something like "Drop the tools, we've got you covered!" over the radio after which the listener would quickly turn the volume back down and remove the radio from the window. Although it has never been proven, it appears that this may have inspired the scene in the movie "Network" in which Peter Finch's character, Howard Beale, tells everyone to go to their windows and yell - "I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."
