Donald Glenn Neff -- born on July 13, 1920, in Danville, Illinois, to Roy Glenn Neff and Esther Louise Madsen -- was raised in Hammond at 6611 Arizona Avenue. After graduation from high school, he worked as a shelver at a local grocery store and at other odd jobs, before enlisting in the Army on March 27, 1943. A few weeks later, Don was off to basic training at Camp Davis, North Carolina. During his time in the service, he married Clementine S. Neff, a native of Gary. Upon discharge, Don returned to Hammond, where he ultimately obtained a position as a switchman on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, while residing for many years at 6526 Colorado Avenue. After retirement, Don and his wife lived in Tampa, Florida, for some years, later returning to Dyer, Indiana, where he passed away on November 1, 2002. Clementine passed away in Dyer on April 18, 2010. |
