Comments: I grew up in Williston Park Long Island,NY. I would listen to Shep on WOR radio at 10PM during the week. I would have my transistor radio on under my pillow so my parents wouldn't hear it. I also became interested in HAM radio due to him. I listened to him until probably sometime in the early 70's. Not sure why I Googled his name tonight Oct 27, 2016 but here I am. This site brought back memories from a long time ago. I hope he is resting in peace.

Comments: Same story, right! Listening to WOR on a transistor under my pillow when I was supposed to be asleep. I had a Shep "buddy" in homeroom, and every morning we would trade notes on the previous night's show. Invariably one of us would have fallen asleep before the end, so we could fill each other in. I had to ask my boss on my first job as a teen permission to miss a day of work to go to a "Wanda Hickey" book signing. My wife now works for the History Channel, and so when one of her producers went to do the interview with him (see the photo on this site) I sent along a copy of "In God We Trust" for him to sign. It only took 30 years. That reminds me, I should get ahold of those master tapes and see what he was like between takes! When I first went online 10 years ago, with a painfully slow modem (this was shortly after the earth cooled), I started learning about this new beast called the internet. You could find info and meet people with common interests. I remember doing a search for Shepherd. There was almost nothing! I remember thinking,"Has the world forgotten him?" Flash forward to about a year ago, doing the search again, and finding this WONDERFUL site, finding WBAI doing rebroadcasts, etc. A real treasure trove of nostalgia. And so now, I've got a ten year old who likes to listen to the tapes now and then, and can't wait for "Christmas Story" every year. Well, its been said before, but its especially true for me: "Shep Lives!"

Comments: Fellows and Gals, I beside myself with joy at finding the threshold to your find electronic alter to the Late Lamented Shep! Being a long living denizen of the Left Coast of America I never got to hear Shep on the radio, and feel somewhat diminished by that.
I first experienced his work on PBS when I was in college, in the form of "Jean Shepard's America". After that I read his books, and larfed and larfed, and am proud to say I was one of the 5 guys in California who saw Christmas Story in the theatre.
Keep up the good work and Tally Ho Fatheads!

Comments: I loved listening to Jean Shepard. Indeed, I would have that radio under my pillow. No wonder I was a wreck in the morning, I had stayed up all night listening. It was well worth it.

Comments: Jean Shepherd opened a whole world of thought & images through the radio (WOR 710AM)for me & a few of my friends during my high school years- late '50s. We heard about Robert W. Service's poems, the Evil Doctor Fu Manchu & his adversary, Sir Dennis Nayland-Smith, south side Chicago & the Chisox and that "new neighborhood paper", the Village Voice. We learned about Japanese haiku and "Straws in the Wind". We marvelled at the hoarde of cockroaches (yuck!) heading down Bleecker Street, seemingly on a mission of their own. Come to think of it, that may have been "a straw in the wind".

Comments: My brother corrected my crummy recollection of the "cockroach army incident". I thought that they were marching down Bleecker on some mysterious mission. In actuality, they were leaving a building which was being torn down and being the enterprising little buggers that they were, they headed across the street where Shep witnessed their trip to new quarters (a new building). If anyone can recall this straw, please respond. Thanks.

Comments: I love your site, thanks so
much for it. I met Shep at a
Wanda Hickey book signing at
Huffmann Koos and i vividly recall
how he made me feel like it was an
honor for "him" to shake "my" hand.
Shep is part of my soul, and I'm very happy
to have found him, and Max, and you.

Comments: I did my high school homework before 9:15 pm and then after 10:15. WOR radio in NY had Shep on from 9:15 to 10 and then my best friend and I would talk about the show for another ten or fifteen minutes. I met him and Leigh Brown twice when I arranged for shows at my college in 1963. A passing comment about the long gone Route 3 drive-in theater turned into twenty minutes that night. The guy was brilliant.

Comments: You folks are so great to build this site, as a rich resource and wonderful testimony to a great humorist, who eventually used almost every form of media available, to give us his unique, intimate and hilarious perspective on American life.
I've enjoyed reliving those radio shows through your site and am eternally grateful. My memories of listening to him, during the adolescent period of my life and then beyond, brings heartfelt tears of nostalgia to my eyes. For those true Shep fans, my older Brother and Sister of whom are included, there was a special spark or element,in the delivery and content of his stories, which defied description.
I looked forward to listening to Shep, while I was supposed to be sleeping. Under the sheet, with my cherished transistor radio, I was transfixed, as were all of the other fans and would stifel my laughter, so my parents would not no I was still awake.
I went on to read his articles and books, watched the PBS TV movies, the Christmas Story film. As a kid, he was Ralph, you, me, all wrapped into one. As an adult, he was the funny old Uncle who took you fishing. Even though this Uncle was imaginary, he was real after all, because of Jean's and our imaginations.
God bless his soul and memory

Comments: Am an avid Robert Service reader as a result of Shep. His Shepard Pie series was very important to me while it evaporated to friends wanting more Shep.
He was very important to me as a swimmer before goggles. I was blind for hours and used the early hours to listen and study after regaining vision. My first car was a Triumph and have hurled invectives my whole life.
Great site was after theme and it fulfilled and exceeded expectations.
Thank You
Harr
