Comments: When I was very young, my family lived in a neighborhood in Hammond, Indiana and Jean brought back memories of that place to me and my mom and dad. (The belching coal furnace, the bitter Indiana cold, the Mills (My dad worked @ Lever Bros. in Hammond), the diversity of the neighborhood, etc.) This was a happy time for us and Jean kept lovingly alive in our hearts and minds. When "Christmas Story" came out, it was like looking at old home movies of us.

Comments: I had the honor of meeting one of, if not THE greatest satirists of our time or any time at a book signing when I was in College. Probably what I admired most about the man was his ability to more or less ad lib an entire show six nights a week. Once in High School, during the "Flick Lives" period, I inadvertantly found 4 different Shep fans in different classes. RIP Shep. We miss you and we love you. Excelsior!!!

Comments: Read the November 30th article in the Chicago Tribune, and came to this site. My Mom, then Phyllis Livingston, was born and grew up in Hammond and graduated Hammond High, class of 1927. Her Aunt and Uncle lived in Hessville. I, too, was born in Hammond in the late '50s, and grew up in Lansing, Illinois, just across the border from Indiana. My husband's favorite movie is A Christmas Story.

Comments: Thanks for posting the 1974 New York Times articles Shep wrote on the Indianapolis 500. They'll put me in a good frame of memory when I'm down there covering the 500 this year.
I can't remember the year I discovered Shep -- I was too young! My parents put me to bed with Shep on WOR and woke me up with Gene Klavan on WNEW-AM.
Jean and Gene, on the surface, may have little in common. Their ability to ad-lib for hours, however, is unmatched in current broadcasting.
Their mikes aren't silent -just moved to a better studio!
Excelsior!

Comments: Yeah, I found Jean Shephard though a story in "Playboy". It was called and was the basis for the film "A Chritmas story". It was a story about youthful innocence . Coincidently, at age 17, a was a youth full of.., well, I was 17 and fipping through a "Playboy"- figure it out.
I wish I now knew who the illustrater was as well as the Headline/teaser writer. Thats's why I started reading. Reading. Reading that 1st paragragh- Hell, reading the 1st sentence was probably enough. Sold. Solid. There.
But then there's the voice. Now I can't remember (or re-read) that lil' story I firsy devoured in "Playboy" without it being played back in Jean Sherphard's voice. Thank you, Jean.

Comments: I WAS 9 YEARS OLD WHEN WE MOVED INTO THE "STRANGE" HOUSE NEXT TO THE SHEPHERDS. WE RENTED THE HOUSE FOR THREE YEARS BEFORE MOVING (NOT IN THE NIGHT! HA-HA) TO A NEW HOUSE THAT WE BUILT ABOUT 4 BLOCKS AWAY. RANDY AND I WERE GOOD FRIENDS AND PLAYED BALL TOGETHER FOR MANY YEARS. SHEP WAS A TEENAGER SO WE WERE NOT AS CLOSE BUT WE WERE FRIENDS. I LAST SAW SHEP JUST BEFORE I ENLISTED IN THE NAVY IN '45. IT WAS HEART-WARMING TO FIND THAT SHEP REMEMBERED ME AND MADE ME THE BRUNT OF ONE OF HIS "STORIES". HE ONLY POKED FUN AT THE OLD FRIENDS HE LIKED. MOST OF THEM ARE NOW GONE, BUT LIVE ON THRU HIS MASTERFUL WORKS.

Comments: I discovered Shep from listening to my Dad talk about him as one of his favorite writers and radio personalities. He used to listen to Shep on the radion in the 50s and 60s. I never had a great relationship with my Dad but in the early 80s, I don't recall the exact year, I got tickets for us to go see Shep in Boston during one of his post Christmas Story tours. It is one of the best memories I have.

Comments: I discovered Shep on my two-transistor Radio Shack AM radio. (Electonics hobbyists of the time may remember the red plastic perfboard-boxed kit.) You tuned this radio by twisting a thin threaded rod that caused the ferrite core of its little RF coil to move in and out, which was something of a challenge as there was no knob, just my 11-year-old fingers. The antenna was a wire clipped to the bedsprings, and the earphone was one of those ubiquitous little white piezoelectric nubbins.
I listened to Shep faithfully throughout my junior high and high school years. He'd broadcast on WOR (NY) from 10:15 to 11:00 PM, and he always had a great story to tell. He had an amazing ability to hold forth, seemingly effortlessly, for 45 minutes, yet tell a well-crafted tale or tales that ended during the last few seconds of his closing theme.
And it always felt like he was confiding in me, personally. His was an amazing gift, and his radio show was an important part of my boyhood.
I'll always remember him with fondness.
