Comments: I think Shep might have been *one* of the reasons why I volunteered to go in the US Army Signal Corps in 1964 (rather than wait around to be drafted into something less pleasant . . .). And I even went to one of his "Limelight" shows while stationed at Ft. Monmouth. A source of cheap amusement for him, I'm sure.
Anyway, nostalgia aside, I treasure the memories of listening to him on WOR (I lived on Long Island at the time), and I miss the monologues.
Excelsior indeed, you fatheads!

Comments: Thanks to Jim for putting this website together.
Throughout my "formative years" in the late 60's, I listened to Shep almost every night on a 9-transistor Philco radio sandwiched between my head and my pillow. His stories were an integral part of my youth and instilled in me a lifelong appreciation for the spoken word and a story well-told.
I was fortunate enough to meet Shep at one of his Overseas Press Club conferences around 1970. Later, as a High School teacher, I would go to great lengths to find ways to work some of his written stories into my curriculum. Just as with a Hitchcock film, I always make a point to try and catch his cameo appearance in "A Christmas Story" every time it's aired during the holidays.
To those of you who may also be fans of Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" program on MSNBC...have you noticed something vaguely familiar about his choice of the theme music he plays during the "oddball" segment?

Comments: When will there be a SHEP convention? I would come up from FL for it. My favorite story would be " the army story when someone jumped off the train when it stopped and did not get back on in time when the train atarted rolling again".

Comments: Shep makes me laugh like no one else can, quite possibly because, as a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's, I can relate all-too-well to his tales. Over the years, I've given his books as gifts time and time again to introduce a true American treasure to those poor souls who never had the good fortune to hear him on the radio or see him on TV. It's sad, but they don't make 'em like that anymore.

Comments: Every Sunday night, after the WOR news Shep's theme song would sneak up on you and for the next 45 minutes it was pure, beautiful storytelling. Thank you for the sute!!

Comments: I produced and directed Shepherd's Pie - a 26 program series that aired nationally in 1970's and was shot at NJN studios in Trenton, NJ.
Also, some TV specials with him including an outdoor concert at the Clinton Museum on a very hot summer night in July.
We became great friends and I miss him more each year, especially around the holidays.
