Comments: He would do public TV appearances telling stories. I bought the book with Wanda Hickey after seeing his show. I also caught some radio shows. Shepard was once interviewed on an FM station that played avante guarde music, TRIAD. Ken Nordine had a 5 minute spot at closing each night at 11:55PM. In the early Triad days, some of the shows were live. I believe Shepard guested on a couple of them.
Tidbit: My father was a lot like Ralph in Christmas story, and I have a brother Randy. Between that and the Chicago area storyline, it is incredibly nostalgic!

Comments: I WAS IN THE ARMY IN STUTTGART, WEST GERMANY WHEN A ROOMMATE OF MINE, WHO WAS FROM NEW YORK, TOLD ME THAT I WAS FROM THE SAME TOWN AS JEAN WAS. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. HE THEN INFORMED ME OF HIS BACKGROUND, AND I STARTED TO READ HIS SHORT STORIES IN PLAYBOY. AS MY LIFE HAS PROGRESSED TO DATE, I LOOK FOR HIS ARTICLES AND TAPES OF HIS SHOWS. WE EVEN HAD A JEAN SHEPHERD CENTER JUST BUILT IN HAMMOND THIS PAST YEAR IN MEMORY OF HIM. HE SURE HITS NORTHWEST INDIANA TO A TEE.

Comments: I fell in love with the guy the first time I heard. I was then living near Boston, It was difficult getting good reception from New York, but Jean was worth the hassle of testing a plug-in radio for the best reception in all the plugs in the house. That method usually brought forth some of his wonderful words; his priceless humor. In 1961, I listened to him often and clearly while I was a grad student at Rutgers. Those were the days. I hope that this web site(which I haven't fully explored as yet) will offer his recorded genre for purchase. Jean's unforgettable stories and humor. One of my favorite stories that appeared in Playboy is A Pocketfull of Fig Newtons.
I am very happy to have tapped into Google which brought me to this master humorist and story teller.

Comments: Mr. Shepherd was an incredible personality, and way before his time. His insight to humanity, and "the way we are" was portrayed so vividly.... i've missed him. Hoping when i return home for a visit this spring, i'll get a chance to see the new center. Congratulations, Hammond! You're recognizing an important member of your history! And, thanx Mommy Mary, for sharing this site with me. All my best,
kat
