Comments: Like so many I had my brand new Transiltor radio under my pillow, and eventually heard Shep's theme, it took me days (at least it seems like it now) to wait until I heard someone talk.
And then I heard him and well the reswt as they say is history.
(Anyone know if he used to show up late and they used the theme to cover his dead air?)

Comments: My first recollection of Shep is from around 1965, when my family was driving back from Wisconsin to our home in New Jersey. It was late at night and my sister and I were in the back seat of our 1963 Rambler American (a car of distinction). My sister was sound asleep, but I wasn't giving up so easily. My dad was driving and he turned on the radio looking for something to keep him alert. He found WOR, where we caught Shep in his prime. He was telling about Army war games, with planes simulating bombing runs by dropping bags of flour on the troops. My parents heard me chuckling in the dark, and they both knew that Shep had taken another into his fold.
I was a loyal listener, and went to bed with the radio on each night, first to hear Shep and maybe also to listen to Barry Farber, whose show followed Shep's.
You never new what you would hear with Shep, but he shared a world of experiences. His stories were rich and detailed, with characters behaving in funny but believable ways. My favorites were stories of the steel mill, growing up in Indiana, the being in the signal corps, but he had the ability to make any topic fascinating.
Because I was local to New York I had the pleasure of attending some of his live performances (at NCE (now NJIT), at Princeton University, in Clinton, in Red Bank, and at Carnagie Hall in New York. Every show was a gem.
Shep went off the air in 1977, and his absence is felt.

Comments: I met Jean Shepherd at two different book signings in Plainfield, NJ. I also saw him in concert at Princeton University, at Red Bank, at Clinton, at NCE (since changed to NJIT), and at Carnagie Hall.
I provided Max Schmid and two other Shep archives with almost 200 shows recorded between 1970 and 1974. These were recordings that I first made while in high school, on cassettes. Over time I had to move the recordings onto reel-to-reel as the cassettes began to seize up. When the reel-to-reel recordings began to fail (30+ years after my original recording dates), I transferred the shows to a digital format.
When I was in college I nearly lost the whole collection when I was transporting the collection between school and home. My car's tailpipe rotted off and the floor of my trunk got very hot. About half of the cassettes had deformed. I ended up buying new cassettes with housings that were held together with screws, and then I transferred the tape from the melted housings into the new housings.

Comments: He made going to sleep an unforgetable experience. My parents forced us to go to sleep at a certain time, according to how old you were. I think my time was 9:30.
I would toss and turn or try to read a car or Superman m
agazine by flashlight. One day an older cousin, who was into hobbies, gave some of us younger cousins a radio which didn't require batteries. it was a grey, plastic jet airliner. You would pull out the metal nose which I believe acted as an antenna and clip a wire onto something metalic an you would recieve some stations. One of the strongest signals was WOR and that's how I discovered JS. His stories were espesically great during the cold winter.

Comments: Like many others I went to sleep each night with a transistor
radio to listen to Jean each night way past my bedtime. His
story telling transported me to places and people I never
knew but he 'laughed' me to sleep 5 nights a week. I met
him twice at "press conferences" he held for high school
newspapers in the late 1960's....However my Jean Shepherd
highlight is that when I moved to Rhodesia in 1972 I had my
father tape his shows with an old reel to reel and send them
to me in Africa. They became very popular within my circle of friends and in my army unit. In fact a fellow soldier
who was with Radio Rhodesia in civilian life tried to initiate the airing of Jean Shepherd in Rhodesia but existing
trade sanctions against Rhodesia prevented that possibility.
I drive a truck for a living at times and listen to a lot
of radio these days and NOTHING currently on the radio comes
close to Shepherd. His voice and talent is sorely missed.

Comments: I was raised in Kearny, NJ. My amateur radio mentor WA2KRN told me about Shep's radio show on WOR and I listened to his show from then on. I always wanted to go to the Lime Light and see the Saturday show live, but never made it. I did get to meet Shep a number of times at diferent ham-fests in New Jersey. I have two son's and they have read some of the books I have passed down to them. I will always remember spending Christmas at my siter inlaws house the year she got married, and finding that the one thing her new husband insisted on at Christmas time was watching "A Christmas Story" Thank You for a wonderful web site, i look forward to spending some time here.

Comments: I wish there were some tapes for Shepard's early morning show from Philadelphia PA--it was surreal--it was great. I remember staying up to hear his incredible imagination and presentation. I was always late for high school. Experiencing Shepard's show was worth it.
