Comments: I used to listen to Shep out of WOR when I was in high school in Phila. I remember his Haiku with music. He also had everyone listening go to a corner of the room (north, south, east or west) to try to tilt the planet. When they tried to stop folk singing in the park in NY City, he had his listeners go to the park and "mill" for several hours quietly.
What a way to pass time as a high school student.

Comments: We watched (Again - Every year) his version of a Christmas story and finally decided to do a web search and fouand this site.
We moved here to Arizona May 1999 and since we've been here we've wondered what became of him. Never heard of his passing. One of the bad things here is a lack of true culture. Any not knowing Shep is seriously laking and not even a mention of his passing here.
But to Shep, used to go to bed listening to him, with the radio on auto-off. Lived in Jersey for a while and got to see him at a few of Princeton's homecoming weekends. My most vivid memory of him is - The first time I saw him. He (among other things spoke of a few army buddies going to the Jersey Shore to see an ocean they (coming from the farm states) they had never seen. Ate more lobster that they never seen much less eaten, much too much And then rode an Ferris Wheel, AND PUKED IN THE CAGE & COULDN'T GET OUT 'TIL IT WAS OVER.
There were a few things about that night,
How can anyone ever make you laugh so hard over puking in a Ferris wheel that you laugh soooooo hard you almost puke yourself. And I learned never to go to Dinner again before a Shep show.
My wife & I still see him every time we drive a back road of Georgia or Arizona or in any of-the-mainsteam-out-of-the-way place and say "What would Shep make of this??" If you listened to him you would know what that's about.
We moved here to Arizona May 1999 and since we've been here we've wondered what became of him. Never heard of his passing.
There are a few tears on my keyboard now. Just missing him was one thing, now finding he's gone is another.
The funniest guy I ever heard and I have seen the best.

Comments: My husband introduced me to Mr. Shepherd 32 years ago, and I haven't stopped laughing since! We've cherished all the stories heard over the radio and the films on our PBS station. The only thing we get upset over is that we never see these stories anymore...I don't know the names of them, but I've always remembered parts of them...i.e., the story about the 4th of July when a firework destroys the porch of a grumpy neighbor....the story of a dance at a Polish church. Are any of these available on VHS/DVD? We'd love to purchase them. Of course, the Christmas Story is watched by us at least 5 times every Christmas....My daughter, who is now 28, is also hooked on Jean....Will he be doing anymore PBS specials?? Please notify me of the above answers.
Long Live Jean Shepherd!!!!!

Comments: How I discovered Shep -- not exactly so. I first heard him at a convocation at Union College in Schenectady in (I think)1969. I also saw him at Worcester Tech perhaps in 1973 or 74. alas, he gave essentially the same speech at both. I used to listen to him on WGBH in Boston in the early 70s and HAVE A FEW PROGRAMS recorded to which you are welcome if you don't already have them. How do we determine this? Oh yeah, i also subscribed to Playboy. For the articles, of course. Shepherd's articles.

Comments: Really did have that little transistor radio under my pillow. Couldn't wait to go to bed and stifle my giggles. Went to sleep with a smile every night. I miss him.

Comments: So I'm not the only one who wore out many a battery on my old transistor radio hiding it under my pillow or being distracted from my homework till all hours of the night back in the late 50's and early 60's. In the late 80's I was in Maine and a member of the Maine Home Builders Association. We wanted to find a copy of the film Phantom of the Open Hearth to show at our organization Christmas party, since I thought all the builders would love it. I think had the episode with the do-it-yourself home kit arriving by boxcar and all the friends (with many cases of beer) helping unload it to help put it together, but the beer got the best of them and the closing scene of that particular episode showed the lumber and prospective builders scattered all over the train yard among the beer cans. We tried finding a copy everywhere to no avail. Then about a month later we found out Shep lived practically next door in Waterville, Maine. He probably could have gotten us a copy or even been a guest speaker at our gathering! Oh well....Excelsior!

Comments: Pretty sure it was '67, but not positive.
Boy-O-Howdy, saw him live at Rutgers, Middlesex County College, the Fortune Theatre in the Village (and THEREBY hangs a tale!). . . .
