Glad there is a site that provides a way to enjoy him

Comments: When I ask people my age (57)if the ever heard of Jean Shepherd they say "Who?" Boy, did they miss out! I really love his humor and how real his experience was. It gives me the feeling that it's all going to be OK! Even today....

Comments: Many a night I fell asleep listening to the Shep. I remember when I returned from overseas the first night back home I once again drifted off to the sounds of the kazoo and the Bear missed the Train

Comments: Duke Huan was reading in the upper part of his hall and Wheelwright Flat was hewing a wheel in the lower part. Setting aside his hammer and chisel, the wheelwright went to the upper part of the hall and inquired of Duke Huan, saying, "I venture to ask what words Your Highness is reading?"
"The words of the sages," said the duke.
"Are the sages still alive?"
"They're already dead," said the duke.
"Then what my lord is reading are merely the dregs of the ancients."
"How can you, a wheelwright, comment upon what I am reading?" asked Duke Huan. "If you can explain yourself, all right. If you cannot explain yourself, you shall die."
"I look at it from my own occupation," said Wheelwright Flat. "If the spokes are loose, they'll fit sweet as a whistle but the wheel won't be solid. If they're too tight, you won't be able to insert them no matter how hard you try. To make them neither too loose nor too tight is something you sense in your hand and feel in your heart. There's a knack to it that can't be put into words. I haven't been able to teach it to my own son, and my son hasn't been able to learn it from me. That's why I'm still hewing wheels after seventy years. When they died, the ancients took with them what they couldn't transmit. So what you are reading are the dregs of the ancients."

Comments: I listened to his 11:15 PM broadcasts in the early 60's in my NJ bedroom with my clock radio on very low volume (I was supposed to be asleep!).
---hearing Shep's voice on the website downloads brings back wonderful memories. Was told about it by a colleague who also grew up in the NY Metropolitan area and was a listener during his formative years. Before there was Garrison Keeler and Lake Woebegone, there was Shep! Thanks!

Comments: spent many, many an hour (or more on saturday) listening to shep. Had the opportnity to tslk with him on the air. I spoke to connecting my brother to an antenna to pick up his signal in JERSEY. My younger brother called in suggesting cereal names of mummy-os one night. If you have an mp3 of these contact ASAP. Saw him in New Brunswick, Sommerville, Metuchen among other places when he got into doing appearances. His (unread) 4th of July show my favorite. Also liked the gravy boat riots as well. Flick Lives

Comments: Jean Shepherd was raised were I was raised Hammond, Indiana and to this day I still see many of the same things Shep talked about, like the Bumpesus and sticking a tounge on a frozen pole....and i can go on and on.....I too have always observed these same human traits and i truly believe that Shep lives on in all of us curious enough to discover who we really are and why we are the people we pretend to be!

Comments: As a kid I would lay in bed in the dark and tune around on my Japanese transistor radio to try to see what I could find. I found Sheperd fading in and out on WOR. For quite a while I didn't know who he was - just when and where he was on the dial. Later NPR syndicated his shows, and I listened to them on FM without all the static. Like many - I was greatly influenced during my formative years, and perhaps never took anything seriously - or at least without a grain of salt as a result. Now I have all the books, and as of a couple of years ago - about 900 of the shows in MP3 format. I think that I was pretty lucky to have him there when I needed him...as do many others. Excelsior !
