Comments: I saw Jean at my college (RIT) around 1968 - I believe twice. While he gave his talk, he was being "translated" for the many deaf students in attendance (the National Technical Institute for the Deaf was and is part of the school.) He slowed down a few times to let the "signer" catch up, and then stopped all together after saying the word "ass," waiting and watching, and then saying something like "I wanted to see what the symbol for that was!"

Comments: I used to go to sleep every night when I was kid listening to him on WOR. I especially liked it when he talked about HAM radio. To this day I still practice Ham radio. The best story was his prom date which ended badly with the turkey problem.

Comments: Shep appeared at Newark State College (now Kean Univ.) in 1965.
He hung out with the college newspaper staff in our office before his performance and joked a bit. He was quite relaxed, and mentioned that our campus pub, Eddie Malones Lounge was one of the nicer ones that he had seen and he liked the tiffany lamp collection there. I saw him again many times at the Limelight in the Village and also several times at Princeton.

Comments: As a young girl growing up in Poughkeepsie NY, I listened with my mother on one of those huge old time floor radios that had an orchard of tubes in the back. In the 60's we listened every night he was on as he spun tales of life and humor that had us laughing at ourselves and others. He captured life as it was, and made fun of it as well. He has always been a great treasure in my heart and I will never forget what he gave me. I am so pleased to have found this site.

Comments: I first caught "Shep" on WOR in the early '70's while growing up in southern Maine. The signal wasn’t very strong, so his show - on the rare occasions when it could be heard - was definitely a treat. I remember often having to raise and twist the radio to get just a passable signal. Listening to Jean Shepherd was not a casual thing - it required some effort.
It was my first exposure to a true storyteller, someone who could paint wonderful characters and build an image of an America to which I always wanted to be introduced. My visits to the Midwest have always been seen through a prism he helped create for me, for this I'll always be grateful.
Although I was disappointed that “Jean Shepherd's America” didn't succeed on television, I'm not at all surprised. I believe his magic worked largely with your own imagination, which is why radio was the perfect medium. Television - even PBS - wasn't going to capture what Jean Shepherd could provide. Most people, I’m afraid, just didn’t have the patience for his genius.
I believe Bill Bryson is closest to a modern-day Jean Shepherd. Although he doesn’t do radio, his writing sneaks up on you in watch the same Shep’s does; Bryson also doesn’t translate well onto television. If you haven’t checked out his work, do yourself a favor and pick up “Lost Continent”.

Comments: As a kid I lived in Penna. with my Mom, and the only radio station she listened to was WOR. We were both Shep fans, and listening to his shows was always a treat. By the time I was in college in the early 1960s I was a ham operator and after looking up his address in the Callbook I actually went into NYC in an attempt to pay him a visit. By some luck I was able to get past the doorman in his apartment and call him up on the apartment annunciator in the lobby. We had a brief talk wherein he said he'd love to invite me up but he'd just been to the dentist to have a tooth extracted and wasn't up to having visitors. (True? Who knows. At that point the doorman caught me and I was quickly escorted back outside.)
Sadly I never got to contact him on the air, but a ham friend did. My friend got to tell Shep about his surplus output meter on his homemade amplifier. The meter, purchased cheap at a fleamarket, had a scale that read in "Percentage of Fat"- "100% Fat" was full power out. Shep got a good laugh out of this, and I'd like to think he managed to work that into one of his wonderful stories at some point.
Shep, you're sorely missed. Keep your knees loose wherever you may be!
