Lying there in bed at night with the lights out listening to Shep is an indelible childhood memory. While the show was 45 minutes, it seemed like seconds between when the music faded out and then faded in. I really wish a radio station had the courage to find and then run his old tapes at 10pm. The stories were timeless.

I stsrted listening to him on WOR out of NYC when I was a kid. I introduced my father to him with a story in Playboy. I still hear his voice when I read his books. A great American storyteller.

I listen to Shep every night on WOR from sometime in the 60s until sometime during the 70s when I moved south. I hadn't thought much about him since his death in 1999, but recently our concert band started rehearsing for our next concert which included "The Clear Track Polka (Bahn Frei). Rememberances of Shep brought tears of emotion. Although he was 8 years older than I, our early lives were very similar - I lived in the midwest (WI) before childhood became over-organized. When I lived in NJ I saw him in the title role of "Destry Rides Again" at the Music Circus across the border in New Hope, PA. I shoulda got his autograph.

Sons of the Whiskey Rebellion guitarist Wiley Sabo was my barber. I was just looking at a picture that appeared in the local paper, one where Wiley is giving me a "Beatle Haircut". It was 1963...

When I was a young man I liked to listen to distant stations after I went to bed. I discovered Long John Nebel? on WOR and then I happened to hear Shep because he came on either before or after Long John (I think it was before.) I'm not sure of the year but think it was around 1958.

Hooray for Shep! He had to have been a snoop, spying on me as I grew up in the shadows of the big mills. He must have seen my house on Oak street and accompanied me on the playground at Henry S. Evans School. He had to have known my mom (AKA the snowsuit bundler) and my dad (AKA the recipient of many MAJOR AWARDS). I remember the Santa/scene at Montgomery Wards in the Village-- anybody else remember that one?. He had to have been there on Christmas morning with my siblings and I when we unwrapped such notables as Bozo the rockem sockem clown and yes, my BB Gun (really it was an air rifle--my parents really believed that stuff about shooting my eye out, but close enough). He had a keen eye, sharp ear and honest heart! He is my literary hero--the only writer who could possibly make the Calumet Region shine with authenticity! Can't wait for the fest! Hope someone has a copy of My Summer Story on video.

Don't hold me to the discovery year, but it was when he first came to NY. He was on WOR, Saturday afternoon.Oner of the early stories I recall was about collecting tinfoil in the gutter. I remember the Wanamaker cabbage soup deal, the I,Libertine fiasco, hurling invectives, the Army stories about Gasser and Zinsmeister. I saw him several times live, once in the bar in Paterson, N.J. called the Amber Lantern. I also saw him at Fairleigh Dickinson College where he was superb

"What a strange, strange trip it's been"..... Recently on a rediscovery tour of Shep. It started with an MP3 set (under $20 on Ebay),the Bergmann book (FABULOUS!) as filler and about three hours a day commuting from the Jersey Shore (and back) listening to Shep in chronological order. Never really connected the dots before, but learned to fly because of a Shep program on PBS (he was soaring). Haven't thought about that in ages. I highly recommend your own magical mystery tour, if you have the time, that is. Listening to the old shows takes you back to what YOU were doing that day...but it's addictive. Mindless commuting is ideal.

Being from the area he lived in, and still living in Indiana, I was proud. His stories remind me of being a kid in that wonderful, carefree time. Growing up in Indiana was special. I only wish I had discovered Mr. Shepard sooner, I enjoy his sense of humor, and his unique story telling ability.
