Comments: My Mom got me hooked on Shep when I was in grammer school and I went to sleep listening to him until I went away to college. When I was in high school, I asked my Latin teacher to translate "In hoc agricula conc" and a smile came across her face - she was a Shep fan too.

Comments: I always kicked myself for not taping any of Shep's shows. About a year ago, I started an internet search to see if I could find some to buy. Found this site and Fathead Central. I am in Excelsior Heaven now!!

Comments: Hello,
Had no idea that this site existed, good job!.
I was born in East Chicago, in 1954. I grew up in Hessville and worked at Inland Steel till 1984. I think Shep worked there or at nearby Youngstown Steels' open hearth. Hence the steel shop story. I was then and am still now a big fan .
Shep was almost completey forgotten in the Region in the 70's till the PBS series. Is there a museum anywhere, I'd love to open one in Hessville.

Comments: I grew up in a small town in NJ, just outside NYC. I was about 11 when I first heard Jean on the radio. Too young then to become a regular. Eventually, I got a "6 Transistor" radio, with an antenna that spun around. It was a birthday present when I was in Jr High. It sat at my bedside. First on Sundays, then on Weeknights, I would delight to the musings of this wonderful storyteller.
Now, years later, after enjoying the annual "Christmas Story" fest, and after telling my son about those great programs, he surprised me with the CD's. I can't believe my ears!
I have to say that the fidelity of the cd's is so much better than what came over that old AM radio. I actually made the audio worse on the player, just to try to re-enact the glory of those AM radio broadcasts.
Thanks so much for bringing back the best story-teller I have ever had the privilege to hear. Keep up the good work.

Comments: It was 1964 and I was fresh out of college and living in Arlington, VA. I was a long way from where I grew up on Chicago's southeast side right across the state line from Hammond. Tuning the radio own night I heard this voice with the definte nasal twang of someone from Chicago's "sout" side or across Stateline Road in Indiana. He sounded like me! I was hooked! From that night on, I listened to stories about Flick, Swartz, Cedar Lake, Used care lots on Stoney Island in Chicago, and a Daisy Red Ryder BB rifle. until I move back to Chicago in the late 60s - way out of the reach of WOR.

Comments: My mom (usually asleep by 8pm) didn't find out for decades that my dad let us stay up and listen to Shep on WOR at 10:15 every night. When "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" was published, we stood for hours in line, at Brentano's in Morristown, to get his autograph. He said I was an "elegant young lady"...totally far from the case, but I BELIEVED him back then. I've also never washed my "Shepherd's Pie" shirt he autographed - a fact which probably would've had him shaking his head. I wish kids today could have someone as observant, wry, and affectionate to listen to.

Comments: 1964 High school graduation year. Cherry Hill H.S.,Cherry Hill, N.J. Listened to quite a few shows on friends brothers car radio.(w. William Scott) A swell Chevrolet Corvair (unsafe at any speed) Reception was pretty good most of the time. Though he faded in and out. We just had to be patient. No one else like him anywhere on the radio dial then. He deserves at least as much recognition as Studs Terkel. And Mark Twain, even. Jack Kerouac never faced an audience every night! R.I.P.

Comments: A high school class-mate told me about Shep, and I started listening in 1962 on WOR in NY. I had a Jefferson-Travis transistor radio connected to a pair of army surplus headphones, connected in such a way to produce near FM quality (too techy to go into). I needed the headphones, as I was supposed to be sleeping, but had to listen to Shep. I remember hearing the tick-tock of a clock in the background, which could also be heard when listening to him on WOR-FM. Met him at the Limelight, where he autographed a napkin for me, which I used as a bookmark for "In God We Trust....." Went to a Merv Griffin TV show in the late '60s where he was a scheduled guest. Well, they ran over, and he never appeared. The show was terrible!!
Loved his army shows and ham radio related stories.
I'd love to get some CDs of his WOR shows to listen to when driving to and from work. EXCELSIOR!!
