Shepherd opens by reading a postcard from Jamestown, North Dakota, then launches into a comic commercial parody for "Wolf's Kasha" (the "elegant" variety with two f's). He riffs on food ruts, organic eating, and a bit about bad kasha stuck to the roof of his mouth, followed by a quick salute to Mother's Oats.
He pivots to college football and a "Scraping Bottom" column by Dick Brinster that ranks the nation's worst teams. Lycoming is #1 (outscored badly, averaging about one point per game), followed by teams such as Adelphi, Hamilton, Norwich, Cootstown, Case Western, Westchester Teachers, Hampton Institute, Grove City, and Oberlin. Navy's defense gets a special mention for giving up ~39 points a game. No team on the list has a win; some have gone years without a touchdown. He contrasts this with the absurdity of preseason #1 rankings and book-ad hype.
Shepherd then plugs his live appearance the next night (Saturday, Oct. 16) at the Bloomfield College gym in New Jersey - his "first winning act" for a team so bad it didn’t even make the worst-ten list (beaten by Clifton High freshmen). He jokes about doing an underwater ballet in a new green bikini (topless version), the stage being wired, paying off the "Bloomfield fuzz," and signing books (including writing in the "obscenities" he was forced to cut) at the Knox Hall bookstore from 3–5 p.m. Ticket info is given.
He reads a newspaper item about an "elegant" forest-green riot suit (with tasteful grenade pockets, ventilation flaps, tapered cut, flame-proof material) from Sports Caster of Seattle, designed for both function and fashion. This leads into a note asking if he was ever in jail. After some banter about Ralph Nader's techniques resembling Joe McCarthy's and a trivia bit about David Schine, he decides to answer.
The main story: While a low-ranking Signal Corps "yard bird" in Washington, D.C., he traded KP for a four-day pass, scraped together ~$35, and decided to go home to Hammond, Indiana, for the first time in two years. He bought a cheap GI-rate ticket on the Capital Limited train to Chicago. Exhausted after KP, he fell into a deep sleep in his reserved seat. He awoke to the conductor and two MPs demanding his ticket (which had vanished from his blouse) and wallet/pass (also gone). A nearby passenger claimed never to have seen him. The train stopped specially; the MPs took him off and he was jailed in Dry Run, Pennsylvania, as a suspected AWOL/deserter. He notes the jail served good pancakes (no syrup) and black coffee, and he got a roommate. He never made it home. He teases the rest of the story for the next show and ends as the news comes on.
