Family Day celebrations

September 17, 1978

This piece appeared in the Echoes-Sentinel (Warren Township) of August 17, 1978: The New Jersey Family of the Year will be named during Family Day celebrations at Rutgers University Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 17. Family Day is intended to focus attention on the family as a vital institution in American Society, according to Rev. Finbarr Corr, director of the Family Life Bureau for the Paterson Diocese of the Catholic Church. Family Day, headed by former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon, is a non-denominational celebration of the American family. The Sunday, Sept. 17, festivities at Rutgers Stadium will feature Stephanie Mills, star of Broadway's "The Wiz," radio personality Jean Shepherd, sports stars from the Knicks, Rangers and Cosmos, and various children's attractions, including Ronald McDonald. Father Corr explained the purpose of Family Day, saying, "Because so many scientists are predicting the end of the family, we have chosen to demonstrate our faith in the family as the basic cell of democracy and a permanent, divine institution. A nation is only as strong as its family life." For further information on Family Day, contact the Family Life Bureau, 70 Macculloch Avenue, Morristown, 267-0266.
