The 1920 federal census shows Shep's widowed grandmother Flora and her two sons, Paul and Jean, residing at 5118 Calumet Avenue, a building with 19 apartments in the Washington Park section of the South Side of Chicago. Shep's July 26, 1921, birth certificate shows both Jean and new wife Anna each then residing at 5118 Calumet Ave. (later aka 5118 S. Calumet Ave.)

Sometime in the latter part of the century the building was razed and became a 9504 square-foot vacant lot owned by the city of Chicago.
